Re: Why We Fight: The 2009 edition
by Antonis
That is a great subject. We are actually daily bombarded with "why we fight"-type propaganda, from the papers, TV, and films. Western Enlightment vs Asiatic Obscurantism and all that. These type of articles, are trying to say that Britain and the US are in Iraq for the safety of gay people, and in Afghanistan for women's rights. As if this is enough to go bomb countries to oblivion. George Galloway once replied from stage to the heckling of liberal gay activist Peter Tatchell's supporters (who claim we should not defend Iran's right not to be bombed because gay people are persecuted there) that once the bombs start raining, they won't discriminate between gay and straight, reformer or regime supporter, which shut them up. And of course these kind of articles pre-suppose that all is hunky-dory in the West as far as these matters are concerned. We occasionally read about some tragic story of honour killing perpetrated in a muslim family. Yet when OJ Simpson for example killed his wife and her boyfriend, that was not an honour killing. Really, it wasn't. And there's plenty of marital rape, homophobic violence, religious fanaticism and everything else which we are collectively used to point out about the middle-east, plagues the west as well. It is all a post-modern regurgitation of the old British Imperial language, of the savages who require a firm hand, the white man's burden, patting on their little silly heads with one hand and shooting them with the other, of "steps of progress" and "stability" while the dead pile up daily. It is the arguments of racist hatred and imperialism, of Western Obscurantism if you will, not in a cultural sense, but propaganda seeking to obscure the bombing, the dead and the ruins behind the false pretext of women's suffering and homophobic persecution. So what am i saying here? That we should let women be raped and gay men live in fear? I'm saying we should stop killing afghani women and gay Iraqi men, that we should stop bombing the homes of afghani women and gay iraqi men, that we should stop crushing afghani women and gay iraqi men under the occupation army boot.
