A Piece of the Action (2.3 MB) download
Recorded: June 2005
Elements: GarageBand loops, sound effects, sample and guitar
Sample: Excerpt from a speech by Malcolm X (complete
audio available here)
This track was created for no particular reason. I had been away from GarageBand for a while and thought I should try may hand at it again.
My guitar playing is the small lead piece near the end of the track. I am playing an Epiphone Les Paul.
Who Are Our Enemies? (2.6 MB) download
Recorded: September 2004
Elements: GarageBand loops, sound effects, and samples
Samples: (1) Excerpt from the LP "Quotations from
the Chairman: Read by Martin Donegan" (full
text of excerpt available here) (2) Cultural Revolution-era
song (complete
audio available here)
This track was created for a collection that I was making for a friend to commemorate our attempt at forming a band back when we were in college. Our "band" only consisted of the two of us and our working name was "Solid Olive." This track was originally for a compilation called "Solid Olive: Live at the Gaslight Inn." This "live" album was a follow up to a previous project in which I had compiled some outtakes from our college-era "rehearsals". The "Live at the Gaslight Inn" project has never been completed, much to the relief of everyone everywhere.
Caesar's Speech/Backwards Mess (Live) (2.4 MB) download
Recorded: August 2004
Elements: GarageBand loops, sound effects, samples, and
guitars
Sample: Excerpt from Caesar's final speech in "Conquest
of the Planet of the Apes"
Another selection from the "Live at the Gaslight Inn" project. This one includes ambient crowd noise, hence the description, "Live." This piece was to be the introduction for the "show." Caesar's speech ends at the spot at which the original speech was supposed to end in the movie (some more material was added to the film after initial screenings revealed that viewers thought the ending was too scary and disturbing). I added some effects to the speech to enhance it a bit.
"Backwards Mess" was an extra track that I made for the first Solid Olive project, "Solid Olive: Powers of Deduction." "Backwards Mess" was recorded on a 4-track analog recorder. The analog 4-track recording was originally me playing the Metallica version of "Run to the Hills". In the original 4-track version, I played both parts and added a drum track. Turns out it all sounded better when I played it backwards.
